It is known that large technology companies like Facebook try to learn as much as possible about their users in order to improve their functionalities. And we could find in this excuse the perfect explanation for the launch of a new app by Mark Zuckerberg's company: Facebook Viewpoints.

A few days after announcing Whale (the app dedicated to creating memes), the technology giant has just released  a new market research application that rewards users for responding to surveys and participating in tasks and research.

From the company itself they state, as we can extract from their we Email Data bsite, that: “the best way to improve products is to obtain information directly from the people who use them . ” And so it is. It seems that these ideas will be used throughout the company's portfolio: Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook.

How Facebook Viewpoints works

The way Facebook Viewpoints works is simple. Once registered, the user will receive invitations from the platform to join its programs, after an explanation from Facebook about how they will be used and how many points they will receive for completing each program.

The first available is related to well-being, and according to Zuckerberg's company its goal is to “create better products that aim to limit the negative impacts of social networks and improve their benefits.”

The application user will know at all times what information Facebook is collecting, how it will be used, and how many points they will earn by completing the program.

In the case of the well-being survey, for example, the estimated time is 15 minutes and 1,000 points are awarded for it, which translates into $5. Each time that number of points is reached, Facebook directly sends the money to the user's Paypal account within an estimated period of 7 to 10 days.Facebook ViewpointsThe essential requirement to be able to use it is to be over 18 years old , although each program has its own selection criteria. The app is now available on iOS and Android, but for now only in the United States . The company hopes to expand it to more countries in the future.

What type of information does Facebook Viewpoints request?
Facebook recognizes that through this new application they will request information such as name, email, country of residence, sex and date of birth, although they can also request additional information such as real location.

The fact that the way this information is provided is voluntary could help somewhat mitigate the criticism that the company has received on other occasions for its practices with its users' data.

In any case, Facebook ensures that it will not sell the information from this app to third parties , and that it will not publicly share the activity of its users in other linked accounts without their permission. On the other hand, unsubscribing from the application would not be a problem.
